Staying Safe on Trail Runs

Trails in Capitol View Park in Frankfort, KY

Running on trails is an exhilarating experience, connecting you with nature while providing a challenging workout. But, it's not without its risks. Here are some tips for staying safe when you’re hiking or running on trails.

Know the Trail

Before you set out, familiarize yourself with the trail. Know the terrain and what kind of conditions to expect. Is it rocky or smooth? Are there steep inclines or declines? The more you know about the trail, the more prepared you'll be. Here’s a list of Central Kentucky trail locations you can use as a starting point.

Wear the Right Gear

Your safety can depend on having the right gear. For example, trail running shoes provide better grip and stability on uneven surfaces. Dress appropriately for the weather, and consider bringing a hydration pack for longer runs. It’s a good idea to always wear a Road ID when running or doing other activities so that if you are involved in an accident, first responders can easily find your name and emergency contacts.

Run with a Buddy

Running with a friend can not only make your run more enjoyable, but it can also enhance your safety. A running partner can call for help or assist with an injury if you’re unable to do so yourself.

If you do choose to run alone, let someone know where you're going and when you expect to be back.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Stay vigilant and be aware of your surroundings. This includes watching out for wildlife, paying attention to the trail markers, and listening for other trail users. We recommend leaving the headphones at home. Your ears are just as important as your eyes in providing a safe amount of trail awareness.

Stay Hydrated and Energized

Ensure you have enough water and snacks for your run. Staying hydrated and maintaining your energy levels can prevent fatigue and keep you alert. Pack more than you think you’ll need. You never know when a wrong turn or other unexpected setback will keep you on the trail for longer than you anticipated.

Hitting training goals or taking in amazing scenery are great reasons to hike or run on trails, but safety should always be your top priority. After all, that’s what will keep you on the trails for many miles to come.
